Costa Ricans embrace coffee as a ritual, savoring it in the morning, afternoon, and even at night. For them, “coffee time” signifies a special moment in the day, an opportunity to connect with family and friends, and a chance to live in the present moment.
Given its profound connection to the national identity, Costa Rican coffee has evolved into a delightful elixir, showcasing diverse techniques and varieties available in recommended coffee shop experiences within the city.
On this post, we cover some of the best coffee shops in Los Yoses, which is a neighborhood in the east side of San José, just a bit south of Barrio Escalante.
- Panadería Cumpanis
Cumpanis is inspired by the Latin word “cumpanis”, meaning “with company”. Or, in this case, “with who you share the bread”, so it all starts there.
This bakery has a visible love for the art of baking bread, as well as what it means for foodie culture.
When visiting, you’ll realize that it has become more than just a quick coffee shop; it has an event-like vibe, inviting all people in the area to gather at a cozy place.
Without a doubt, this is one of the highest quality bakeries and coffee shops in the Los Yoses area.

- Café Kracovia
Located right next to the University of Costa Rica, Café Kracovia has been around for more than 10 years.
A somewhat different coffee and restaurant concept, it used to be a place that attracts local artists, academics, and intellectuals in the area.
Kracovia also highlights an interesting architecture with a terrace area that is worth a nice afternoon date.

- Le Rendez Vous
Created by Claude Abad, an entrepreneur that moved to Costa Rica from France around 15 years ago, Le Rendez Vous has created a unique coffee concept in the area.
It started as a very little window where you could find canelé, chouquette and other typical pastries from Abad’s native region of Bordeaux, and it has become of the most iconic coffee shops in the area.
Attracting many students and professionals around the neighborhood, this coffee shop has a very nice ambience and food selection, including sweets and French styled sandwiches. A great place to hang out the afternoon.

- La Petite
Keeping up with the French coffee shop selection in San José, La Petite is also a continuation of La Petite France, one of the pioneering French coffee shops of the area.
The place offers a wide tradition of pastries created by a family of bakers and restaurant owners, known for its high-quality products. They’re currently offering lunch menus with a very wide variety of daily dishes.
